Short Story - 1478 Words
The next few weeks became sort of routine for Jared. Heââ¬â¢d bake bread, make breakfast, garden and clean later in the day. Every evening heââ¬â¢d lite a fire in the sitting room and sat on the floor leaning against Jensenââ¬â¢s legs as the alpha quietly drank away his demons. The upstairs of the manor was as unkempt as the downstairs of the house. Soon Jared had cleaned every room except for two. The master bedroom and the bedroom next to it. Jared found himself unwilling to open either door. His inner omega begging him to leave the rooms alone. He was at war with his inner omega. He wanted to clean the rooms and move on, but his omega was afraid of pissing off the alpha. Jared awoke to the rumble of thunder. He sat up in bed and forced himselfâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦It looked as if it hadnââ¬â¢t been touch in years. In the middle of the room against the wall was a four poster bed that was cover in thick blankets. There was a fireplace directly across from the bed. As Jared walked around the room he saw two doors next to each other on the left side of the bed. To the right of the bed, there were glass doors that led to a balcony. Jared walked over and looked out the balcony windows. It was still raining outside, and he could see that there were a few large puddles that gathered across the lawn. Jared crossed the room to the two doors on the opposite of the room. He opened the first door closest to the exit. Not having any natural light it was dark inside; apparently, it was a large walk in closet. The other door led to a bathroom. Jared needed his lantern to see the roomââ¬â¢s layout. He knew there was a chute downstairs with a pulley so buckets of water could be hauled up and down to the bathroom which was standard practice. Jared went downstairs and hauled up all his cleaning supplies and a couple of lanterns. He stripped the bed of the covers which he took downstairs to clean later. He surprised himself how quickly he finished cleaning the master bedroom. Standing in front of the last bedroom with a lantern in his hand all of his instincts were telling him to turn around and forget about it. ââ¬Å"Get it together, man.â⬠He whispered to himself. Opening the bedroom door, Jared stepped into the room and held the lantern up. ââ¬Å"Shit,â⬠Show MoreRelatedshort story1018 Words à |à 5 Pagesï » ¿Short Stories:à à Characteristics â⬠¢Shortà - Can usually be read in one sitting. â⬠¢Concise:à à Information offered in the story is relevant to the tale being told.à à This is unlike a novel, where the story can diverge from the main plot â⬠¢Usually tries to leave behind aà single impressionà or effect.à à Usually, though not always built around one character, place, idea, or act. â⬠¢Because they are concise, writers depend on the reader bringingà personal experiencesà andà prior knowledgeà to the story. Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues Essay Example
Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues Paper James Baldwinââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Sonnyââ¬â¢s Bluesâ⬠describe the middle of the 20th century. The author refers to the period prior to the Civil Rights Movement ââ¬â in particular, to the dark days of segregation and racial discrimination. I think the author chose those times because he grew in Harlem and wanted to make people aware of that life. Sonny, as well as the narrator, grew up in poor neighborhood of Harlem. Sonny was the son of working class father whose optimism was put down by the death of his brother at the hands of the rural Southern whites. The story shows ensuing struggle of the family in the racist Northern community. The narrator is the teacher of Algebra and Sonny is a child disappointed in life and, therefore, addicted to drug use. The narrator suspects that his students ââ¬Å"are popping off needles every time they went to the head and maybe it did more for them than algebra couldââ¬Å". Apparently, the author refers to drug abuse as the way to escape from the burden of reality, from racial discrimination and oppression. The story is very dramatic and we see that characters are changing with storyââ¬â¢s progression. Character changes are subtle because the plot features a characterââ¬â¢s battle with heroin addiction. It is necessary to outline that this story teaches readers to understand peopleââ¬â¢s bad experiences and suffering. Nevertheless, the story is not simply ââ¬â it depicts complex inner world of a boy who struggle with drug addiction. Music remains the only source to express pain. For Sonny, blues music is catalyst for changes. Music helps the narrator to understand himself and complex relations with Sonny. Baldwin raises the theme of brotherhood and claims that the story implies that we are ââ¬Å"our brotherââ¬â¢s keepersâ⬠. Baldwin stresses that brotherly support is more than control and coercion. Summing up, the story is about the struggle of darkness and light, of good and evil in humans. References Baldwin, James.(2002). Sonnyââ¬â¢s Blues. Oxford: Oxford University Press.

Deductive Essay Sample on the Destructive Use of Tobacco
Deductive Essay Sample on the Destructive Use of Tobacco Tobacco smoking is dangerous, and there is much evidence to support this claim. Each year, tobacco is cited as a contributor to the deaths of close to a half a million people within the US and to a higher figure around the world. The number of people who die from complications that can be traced back to the consumption of tobacco is higher than the number of deaths from alcohol, aids, illegal drugs, and fires combined. Tobacco is, therefore, arguably the leading cause of preventable deaths in America and, indeed, in many other parts of the world. Tobacco is considered a slow killer. This is because smoking tobacco does not result in immediate death but slowly erodes the health of the individual who smokes. Some of the undesirable health effects that have been related to smoking tobacco include having bad breath, wrinkled skin, hair and clothing stench, and the staining of the teeth and nails. Although most of these side effects are not life threatening, lung cancer and other serious health conditions that have been associated with tobacco smoking, result in numerous deaths in many parts of the world. One of the major concerns about tobacco use is that it not only affects the individuals who smoke but also individuals who are around those who smoke. The effects of second-hand smoke can even be more significant than for the actual smoker. Lungs are affected from the harmful gases emitted from the tobacco products. A good number of the individuals who smoke tobacco do not have an idea of what they are smoking because apart from the nicotine, there are many other toxic compounds that are included in the smoke that they are inhaling. Once these compounds get into the lungs, they are absorbed into the blood stream which then transports them to body organs such as the heart, spleen, liver, and the central nervous system. People even get brain cancer that originates in the lungs and then spreads to the brain. Cigarette smoke contains fast acting compounds that immediately stimulate the central nervous system, which is what causes feelings of pleasure for the smokers. While feeling the pleasure, the other compounds slowly and progressively affect the functioning of the aforementioned body organs in what eventually results in deadly diseases that cause the eventual death of the individual. The second-hand smoke inhaled by those who are around tobacco smokers is especially dangerous to unborn children, infants, children, and those with respiratory illnesses. When a pregnant woman smokes cigarettes or is frequently exposed to secondary tobacco smoke, the smoke gets to the unborn baby and may later result in conditions such as sudden infant death. Whether it is by smoking or by inhaling secondary smoke, tobacco use is, without doubt, hazardous, as illustrated by the numerous diseases and eventual fatality that are connected to it. Tips for essay writing: Since this is a deductive essay, one is supposed to give several points that can be used to lead to a specific conclusion which, in this case, is that tobacco smoking is a deadly habit. It is a good practice that one should make known what is to be deduced from the content of the essay early enough in the essay so a reader can tell what the point of the essay is. Racial Classification Under Apartheid
Racial Classification Under Apartheid In the Apartheid state of South Africa (1949-1994),à your racial classification was everything. It determined where you could live, who you could marry, the types of jobs you could get, and so many other aspects of your life. The whole legal infrastructure of Apartheid rested on racial classifications, but the determination of a persons race often fell to census takers and other bureaucrats. The arbitrary ways in which they classified race are astounding, especially when one considers that peoples whole lives hinged on the result. Defining Race The 1950 Population Registration Act declared that all South Africans be classified into one of three races: white, native (black African), or colored (neither white nor native). The legislators realized that trying to classify people scientifically or by some set biological standards would never work. So instead they defined race in terms of two measures: appearance and public perception. According to the law, a person was white if they were ââ¬Å"obviously...[or] generally accepted as White. The definition of native was even more revealing: a person who in fact is or is generally accepted as a member of any aboriginal race or tribe of Africa. People who could prove that they were accepted as another race, could actually petition to change their racial classification. One day you could be native and the next colored. This was not about fact but perception. Perceptions of Race For many people, there was little question of how they would be classified. Their appearance aligned with preconceptions of one race or another, and they associated only with people of that race.à There were other individuals, though, who did not fit neatly into these categories, and their experiences highlighted the absurd and arbitrary nature of racial classifications.à In the initial round of racial classification in the 1950s, census takers quizzed those whose classification they were unsure about. They asked people on the language(s) they spoke, their occupation, whether they had paid native taxes in the past, who they associated with, and even what they ate and drank. All of these factors were seen as indicators of race. Race in this respect was based on economic and lifestyle differences - the very distinctions Apartheid laws set out to protect.à Testing Race Over the years, certain unofficial tests were also set up to determine the race of individuals who either appealed their classification or whose classification was challenged by others. The most infamous of these was the ââ¬Å"pencil testâ⬠, which said that if a pencil placed in ones hair fell out, he or she was white. If it fell out with shaking, colored, and if it stayed put, he or she was black. Individuals could also be subjected to humiliating examinations of the color of their genitals, or any other body part that the determining official felt was a clear marker of race. Again, though, these tests hadà to be about appearance and public perceptions, and in the racially stratified and segregated society of South Africa, appearance determined public perception. The clearest example of this is the sad case of Sandra Laing. Ms. Laing was born to white parents, but her appearance resembled that of a light-skin colored person. After her racial classification was challenged at school, she was re-classified as colored and expelled. Her father took a paternity test, and eventually, her family got her re-classified as white. She was still ostracized by the white community, however, and she ended up marrying a black man. In order to remain with her children, she petitioned to be re-classified again as colored. To this day, over twenty years after the end of Apartheid, her brothers refuse to speak to her. Sources Posel, Deborah.
